Interlibrary Loan Policy

Interlibrary loan is a service of the McKee Library for the students, faculty, and staff of Southern Adventist University. It affords access to research materials that are not owned locally or accessible through the library’s online collection.

NOTE: Interlibrary loan is unavailable to non-Southern students, alumni, community card holders, or docent card holders.
Borrowers

Interlibrary Loan is available for Southern students, faculty, and staff. It is not available to community card holders or alumni.

Interlibrary Loan Process
  • All students, faculty, and staff have an Interlibrary Loan account that has already been created for them. Click here to access your account.
  • Select either the email or text option to receive notification as to when your material is available for pick up.
  • Once you update your profile, you will see options to create requests for books, articles, or other materials.
  • Before requesting an interlibrary loan, please search the library’s online catalog to see if we already have the item you need.
  • The turnaround time for books averages ten days. The turnaround time for journal articles averages two days.
  • Patrons will receive a notification on their email or cell phone once the materials are ready to be picked up.
  • If not picked up, the library will hold materials for up to 2 weeks before they are returned.
Materials Available through Interlibrary Loan

The following materials are available through Interlibrary Loan:

  • Journal articles
  • Books
  • Audio/visual materials related to class assignments, faculty research, continuing education, or professional growth.

The following materials are not available through Interlibrary Loan:

  • Required course textbooks
  • Materials that already reside in McKee Library's collections
  • For students, materials that are not related to class assignments or research
  • Materials for non-account holders
  • Whole periodical issues or volumes
  • Rare or valuable materials
  • Bulky or fragile materials
Length of Loans and Renewals

Loans are determined by the lending libraries. Most libraries will allow patrons to borrow a book for three or four weeks, with a possibility to renew for an additional two to four weeks.

Overdue Interlibrary Loan Materials and Fees

Failure to return interlibrary loan materials on time jeopardizes McKee Library’s borrowing privileges with other libraries.

  • Patrons with overdue materials will be notified via email, text, or a phone call.
  • Patrons with overdue materials may be subject to a suspension of their interlibrary loan account.
  • Patron will be responsible for all costs associated with lost or damaged materials. Charges will vary depending on the type of material.
