FAQs
Q. How much time does my group need?»
A. Because our programming is so diverse, the amount of time needed will depend
on the activity you want to do and the goals of your group. Generally, our experience
has taught us that a full-day program offers the greatest return on your investment.
In order to accommodate the special needs of your group, we also provide half-day
programs.
Q. What should I wear?»
A. Our programs occur outside. The way a participant dresses can affect how much he
or she enjoys the experience. Except for water activities, closed-toed shoes are required.
If your group is planning a program on the water, we suggest participants bring an
old pair of shoes or water shoes to wear. Clothing should be comfortable, loose fitting,
and secure. Bring layers, including wind or rain gear. Further suggestions will be
communicated as the day of your event approaches. Most importantly, urge participants
to dress for the weather expected on the day of your visit.
Q. How can I schedule a program?»
A. For any type of program—whether adventure, challenge course, or environmental
education—email our coordinator at adventureprogramming@southern.edu or call 423.236.2416.
Q. What will happen after I get in touch with you?»
A. We will contact you to determine a date and a program that fits your needs.
Once we have agreed upon a date, you will receive an event proposal and contract along
with an invoice for a 50 percent deposit on your event. After we receive the signed
contact and deposit, we will send a participation packet with all of the necessary
information you need to make your event run smoothly. All requests are considered
tentative until the signed contract and deposit are received. Note: alternative dates
are very helpful in planning a program.
Q. What if I need to cancel?»
A. Cancellations are requested to be within 48 hours of the scheduled date. If
you find that a cancellation may be in order, please try to consider all possible
alternatives. If it becomes a necessity, we are happy to reschedule for another time.
If you cancel or decrease your numbers:
- At least 30 days before your program: 100 percent refund
- 4-5 days before your program: security deposit is non-refundable. All other payments: 50 percent refund
- Less than 4 days before the program: No refund
Q. What happens if the weather is severe?»
A. Programs run rain or shine. On rare occasions we cancel due to severe weather
such as lightning. Make sure you bring what you need in order to participate and adjust
to changing weather conditions. In the occurrence of severe weather, the group coordinator
and our staff will decide together whether to continue the program. In some cases,
the program can be moved indoors.
Q. What kind of groups do you host?»
A. Our programs have hosted area K-12 school groups and college classes, sports
teams, youth groups, church groups, and corporate groups. All programs are custom
designed and priced according to individual group needs and objectives. All Southern
Adventist University groups receive a special, on-campus group rate.
Q. How much does a program cost? »
A. The price range for your program is determined by group type, size, and length
of program. Meals are available for an additional cost.
Q. How many people can I bring?»
A. On our challenge course, we work with groups as small as eight and as large
as 125. Adventure program numbers depend on the activity, as we want to ensure that
we have enough equipment to outfit your group. For environmental education, we prefer
to work with one classroom of students at a time; however, we are willing to work
with you to accommodate your needs.
Q. Is there an age requirement?»
A. Yes. Fifth grade is the minimum for participants on our challenge course and
in our adventure programs. However, possible exceptions can be made. Our environmental
education programs are designed for specific grade levels, beginning at kindergarten
and going up through fifth grade. If you do not see a program listed that fits your
needs, we can develop one for you.
Q. What about risk?»
A. Managing risk is our first concern. The programs that we offer involve inherent
risks. All of our staff are trained to follow appropriate risk management procedures.
In all outdoor programs, we incorporate the philosophy of choosing your own level
of challenge. Participants are not required to do anything they do not feel comfortable
doing.
Q. Is adult supervision required with student groups?»
A. Yes. For challenge course and adventure programs, we request that you bring
a minimum of one adult for every 20 students. Environmental education programs require
at least one adult for every 15 students.
Q. Where are you located?»
A. The geographic location of Southern Adventist University provides an unequaled
variety of outdoor learning opportunities. Collegedale is located near Chattanooga,
Tennessee. This area is a premier regional center for kayaking, mountain biking, rock
climbing, and other outdoor sports. For more details, check out our maps and directions.
Q. Can I submit other questions?»

do our best to answer your questions.
